Autumn is when Murcia comes alive

The summer heat fades, the city's biggest festival happens, and the food gets serious. This is the best time to visit if you want the real Murcia.

01

Why Autumn in Murcia Matters

Let's be honest - summer in Murcia is brutal. It's hot, like really hot. Everyone who can leaves town. But autumn? That's when we come back to life.

The temperatures drop to something humans can actually enjoy. The city fills up again. And we throw our biggest party of the year. If you're planning a trip to Murcia, do it in autumn.

What to Do in Autumn

1. Experience the Feria de Murcia

This is our big one. The Feria de Murcia happens in September, celebrating our patron saint. It's a week of parades, concerts, and street parties. The whole city gets involved.

Don't miss the Bando de la Huerta - that's the parade where everyone dresses in traditional farmer clothes. And the Entierro de la Sardina (Burial of the Sardine) that closes the festival. Yes, we bury a giant sardine. It makes sense when you're here.

📍
Local Secret

The best Feria parties aren't in the official venues. Find the peñas - local social clubs that open their doors during Feria. More authentic, less touristy.

2. Eat Seasonal Food

Autumn is harvest time. The huerta (that's our agricultural area around the city) produces its best stuff now.

Look for pimientos de piquillo (roasted red peppers), setas (wild mushrooms), and of course, more grapes than you can handle. The wine harvest happens now too.

La Pequeña Taberna

Traditional Seasonal Menu

Small place near the cathedral. They change their menu weekly based on what's fresh from the huerta. Try the arroz con setas (rice with wild mushrooms) in October.

3. Enjoy Perfect Weather

September starts warm (around 25°C) but by November it's a comfortable 15-18°C. This is walking weather. You can actually explore the city without melting.

Take a walk along the Segura River. Visit the cathedral without sweating through your shirt. Sit in a terrace for hours. This is what we wait for all summer.

4. Visit Without the Crowds

The summer tourists are gone. The cruise ships have moved on. You get Murcia to yourself and the locals.

No queues at the Real Casino de Murcia (our fanciest historic building). Space at the Salzillo Museum (where our famous sculptor's work is). Tables available at good restaurants.

Café del Real

Terrace People Watching

Perfect autumn terrace spot facing the cathedral. Order a café con leche and a tostada con tomate. Watch the city go by without fighting for a table.

5. Experience Local Traditions

After Feria, we have Todos los Santos (All Saints' Day) on November 1st. Families visit cemeteries with flowers. Bakeries sell huesos de santo (saint's bones) - almond paste sweets that look like bones. Try one.

Also look for the matanza del cerdo (pig slaughter) events in villages around Murcia. It's a traditional autumn thing. Not for vegetarians, but very authentic.

6. Day Trips That Work

Autumn weather makes day trips actually enjoyable. The coast is still warm enough for beach visits in September and October. The interior villages are perfect for exploring.

Consider Caravaca de la Cruz - a pilgrimage town with a castle. Or the wine region around Jumilla. The drive through the vineyards in autumn is beautiful.

Practical Tips

💡
Book Early for Feria

If you're coming for Feria de Murcia (usually second week of September), book accommodation months in advance. Hotels fill up and prices double.

⚠️
November Rain

November can get rainy. Not London-level rain, but enough to need an umbrella. Pack a light waterproof jacket just in case.

ℹ️
Spanish Time

Remember we eat late here. Lunch around 2-3pm, dinner after 9pm. Many places close between lunch and dinner. Plan accordingly.

That's autumn in Murcia. Good weather, great food, and our biggest party. Come see us when the city is at its best.
