Why Febrero?
You get Murcia to yourself

February is when the city breathes. No tourist hordes, mild weather perfect for walking, and locals celebrating Carnaval. It's the real Murcia.

01

Weather

February in Murcia is winter, but our winter is mild. Think crisp mornings and sunny afternoons.

Expect temperatures between 8°C and 18°C. It rarely drops below 5°C at night. Rain is possible but not common – maybe 4-5 days in the month.

Pack layers. A light jacket for mornings and evenings, t-shirts for afternoons. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Don't forget sunglasses – the sun can be bright even in winter.

Time Temperature What it feels like
Morning (8am) 8-10°C Cool, need a jacket
Afternoon (2pm) 16-18°C Warm in the sun
Evening (8pm) 10-12°C Chilly, jacket again

Murcianos say "de la mañana a la noche, no te fíes" – from morning to night, don't trust it. Temperatures change quickly.

What to Do

February weather is perfect for being outside without sweating. Here's what works best this month.

Walk the Segura River path

Free
Outdoor Relaxed

The river path (paseo del río) is pleasant in February. Start at the Puente de los Peligros and walk east. You'll see locals jogging, cycling, and walking dogs. No crowds, just city life.

Visit the Cathedral without queues

€5
Culture Indoor

In summer, the cathedral queue snakes around the plaza. In February, you walk right in. The baroque interior is impressive, and the tower climb (203 steps) is easier in cool weather.

Terraza at Plaza de las Flores

€€
Food Local spot

Plaza de las Flores (Plaza of Flowers) has cafes with outdoor heaters. Sit at Bar Catedral or Florida with a coffee and watch the square. In February, it's locals only.

Mercado de Verónicas

Market Food

The covered market is bustling year-round. In February, you'll find winter produce like chard (acelgas) and artichokes (alcachofas). Try a tapa at one of the market bars – standing room only.

📍
Local tip

The botanical garden (Jardín del Malecón) is free and quiet in February. The trees are bare, but the paths are empty and peaceful.

03

Events & Festivals

February means Carnaval. It's not as big as in Cadiz or Tenerife, but it's fun and local.

Early Feb
Carnaval preparations
Costume shops pop up around the city. Locals start planning outfits. The atmosphere builds slowly.
Weekend before Ash Wednesday
Main Carnaval parade
The big parade (desfile) goes through the city centre. Floats, costumes, music. It's family-friendly and not too crowded.
Ash Wednesday
Burial of the Sardine
Entierro de la Sardina – a mock funeral for a sardine, marking the end of Carnaval. Satirical and funny, with a parade and burning of the sardine effigy.

Dates vary each year, but Carnaval usually falls in February. Check the city council website for exact dates.

⚠️
Carnaval timing

If Carnaval falls in early March, February will be quiet. If it's in February, book accommodation early – it's the busiest time of the month.

Day Trips

February weather is good for day trips – not too hot for hiking, not too cold for beaches.

Cartagena (45 minutes by train). The Roman theatre and naval museum are indoors. The port walk is pleasant in February. Less wind than in summer.

Sierra Espuña (1 hour by car). The regional park is great for hiking in February. Trails like the Subida al Morrón are cooler now. You might see snow on the peaks.

Lorca (1 hour by train). The castle (fortaleza del sol) is open and empty. The medieval quarter is perfect for a quiet stroll. Lorca's Semana Santa museum is indoors and interesting.

ℹ️
Transport tip

Trains to Cartagena and Lorca run frequently from Murcia's del Carmen station. For Sierra Espuña, you need a car.

Practical Tips

February is straightforward. Here's what you need to know.

What to pack: Layers (t-shirts, light sweater, jacket), comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, small umbrella just in case.

Reservations: Only needed if Carnaval is on. Restaurants and hotels are quiet otherwise. For Carnaval weekend, book at least a month ahead.

Opening hours: Normal hours apply. Shops open 10am-2pm and 5pm-8pm. Museums close on Mondays. Some smaller places might have reduced hours, but it's rare.

💡
Eating in February

Try winter dishes like olla gitana (a thick bean and vegetable stew) or arroz con conejo (rice with rabbit). They're hearty and perfect for cooler days.

February is a calm month to see Murcia as it is. You'll walk the streets with locals, enjoy the weather, and maybe catch Carnaval. It's simple and real.
