August in Murcia
It's hot, but the city comes alive at night

August is when Murcia (MOOR-thee-ah) empties of locals heading to the coast, but if you can handle the heat, you'll get the city to yourself by day and join the party at night during the Feria. Plan for siestas and late dinners.

01

Weather

August is the hottest month in Murcia. Expect daytime temperatures that make you want to stay indoors from 2pm to 7pm. It's dry, sunny, and relentless.

What to pack:

  • Light, breathable clothes (cotton, linen)
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • High SPF sunscreen (the sun here is strong)
  • Comfortable walking shoes for evenings
  • A refillable water bottle – you'll need it
Time Temperature Notes
Morning (8am-12pm) 25-30°C (77-86°F) Best time for sightseeing
Afternoon (12pm-7pm) 35-40°C (95-104°F) Stay indoors or in shade
Evening (7pm-12am) 25-30°C (77-86°F) Perfect for outdoor dining
⚠️
Heat warning

Temperatures can hit 40°C (104°F) or more. Drink water constantly, avoid the sun midday, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

02

What to Do

Adjust your schedule: do cultural stuff in the morning, hide in the afternoon, and enjoy the night. Here's what works in August.

Cathedral of Murcia

Morning visit Indoor

Visit early to avoid the heat. The interior is cool and quiet in August. Don't miss the bell tower views before it gets too hot.

Terraza del Salzillo

€€
Rooftop bar Evening

A rooftop bar with views of the cathedral. Go around 9pm for sunset drinks. It's breezier up there and perfect for August evenings.

Mercado de Veronicas

Morning market Local food

The covered market is cool in the morning. Grab fresh fruit, local cheese, and maybe some jamon (ham) for a picnic later.

Rio Segura walk

Free
Evening stroll Riverside

Walk along the river after 8pm when it cools down. The lights reflect on the water and it's a local favourite for a paseo (evening stroll).

💡
Siesta is your friend

Locals nap or relax indoors from 2pm to 6pm. Do the same – find an air-conditioned cafe, museum, or your hotel room. It makes the evening more enjoyable.

03

Events & Festivals

The big one is the Feria de Murcia, usually in early September but preparations start in late August. Other events are scarce because everyone's at the beach or on holiday.

Early August
Beach season peak
Locals head to the Costa Calida. The city is quiet, but coastal towns like La Manga are packed.
Mid-August
Feria preparations
You might see stages being set up in the city. Check local posters for small concerts or events.
Late August
Feria de Murcia begins
If it starts in late August, expect parades, music, and food stalls. The city wakes up at night.
🍽️
Feria food tip

At the Feria, try zarangollo (a scrambled egg and vegetable dish) and paparajotes (lemon leaves fried in batter). Wash it down with local beer or wine.

04

Day Trips

August is for the coast or mountains. The city heat makes escaping appealing.

La Manga del Mar Menor: A strip of land between the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor lagoon. Go for swimming in the warm, shallow lagoon waters. It's crowded in August, so go early or book ahead.

Sierra Espuna: The regional park about an hour away. It's cooler in the mountains. Good for a morning hike before it gets too hot. Bring plenty of water.

Cartagena: The port city has sea breezes. Visit the Roman theatre museum (indoor and cool) and walk along the port in the evening. About 45 minutes by car.

🚗
Transport tip

Rent a car for day trips. Public transport is reduced in August. Book rental cars in advance – they sell out.

05

Practical Tips

August requires some adjustments. Here's how to make it work.

💧
Stay hydrated

Carry water everywhere. Many fountains in the city are drinkable – look for "agua potable" signs. Refill often.

Opening hours

Some shops and restaurants close for holidays in August, especially mid-month. Check before you go. Museums usually stay open.

🍴
Dining times

Dinner starts at 9pm or later in August. Many places don't serve food until then. Embrace the late schedule.

What to pack beyond clothes:

  • Power bank for your phone (heat drains batteries)
  • Small umbrella for shade (seriously, locals do this)
  • Spanish phrasebook or app – English is less common in August with fewer tourists

Reservations needed? For popular restaurants during the Feria, yes. Otherwise, August is quiet so you can often walk in. Book accommodation in advance if coming for events.
