Tapas here are about locals, not tourists

Santo Angel is a residential area where people go for a casual drink and bite with friends. Expect simple, honest food and a relaxed atmosphere.

01

The Tapas Scene

Santo Angel (pronounced SAN-to an-HEL) is a pedania – a district outside central Murcia. It's residential, with mountain views and a quiet vibe. Don't come expecting fancy gastrobars or trendy spots. This is where Murcianos live and hang out.

The tapas scene is straightforward. Most bars offer a free tapa with your drink, usually something simple like olives, chips, or a small montadito (a slice of bread with topping). You can also order raciones (larger plates) to share.

Prices are low. A caña (small beer) costs around €1.50-€2, and raciones are €5-€12. It's one of the cheaper areas in Murcia for tapas.

Best Tapas Bars

Here are my picks for where to go. All are real places locals frequent.

Bar El Rincon

Classic Montaditos

A no-frills bar that's been here forever. Their montaditos are the star – try the lomo (pork loin) or tortilla (Spanish omelette). The free tapa is generous. Address: Calle Mayor 12.

La Tasca de Pepe

€€
Raciones Outdoor seating

Slightly more upscale but still casual. Good for sharing raciones like patatas bravas (fried potatoes with spicy sauce) or calamares (fried squid). Has a terrace. Address: Avenida de la Libertad 45.

Cerveceria Santo Angel

Beer Quick bite

A basic cerveceria (beer bar) with cheap drinks. The free tapa changes daily – sometimes it's a mini burger, sometimes cheese. Don't expect gourmet, but it's cheerful. Address: Plaza de la Iglesia 3.

Meson La Cueva

€€
Meat Rustic

Specialises in meat dishes. Order the secreto iberico (Iberian pork) or chorizo al vino (sausage cooked in wine). It's a bit darker inside, feels like a cave (hence the name). Address: Calle del Sol 8.

Local Tips

💡
Go in the evening

Bars are liveliest from 8pm onwards. Lunchtime tapas aren't really a thing here – it's more an after-work or weekend evening scene.

📍
Order a "caña"

Ask for a caña (KAN-ya) – a small draft beer. It's the standard drink for tapas. You'll automatically get a free tapa with it in most places.

⚠️
Don't rush

Service can be slow, especially on busy nights. This isn't fast food – relax, chat, and enjoy the pace. It's part of the experience.
