This modern residential area has a solid selection of bars serving creative tapas and montaditos (small sandwiches) at fair prices. It's relaxed, family-friendly, and perfect for a casual evening out.
The Tapas Scene
La Flota is a modern, middle-to-upper-class neighbourhood in northern Murcia. It's not the historic centre, so don't expect ancient buildings or flamenco shows. What you get instead is a clean, safe area with well-kept streets and a focus on good food.
The tapas scene here is about quality over quantity. Bars tend to be spacious, with terraces that fill up in the evenings. The crowd is mostly locals—families, couples, friends catching up. It's lively but not rowdy.
Prices are mid-range. You'll pay around €3-5 for a tapa, €2-4 for a caña (small beer). Many places offer a drink with a free tapa, but the free ones are often simple—think olives or chips. For the good stuff, order separately.
Best Tapas Bars
Here are my top picks. All are within walking distance in La Flota.
La Tasca de Pepe
€€A classic spot with a long bar and wooden barrels. Their montaditos (small sandwiches) are the star—try the lomo con queso (pork loin with cheese). Address: Calle Rio Segura 12.
El Rincon de la Flota
€€Bright and modern, with a menu that mixes Murcian staples with new ideas. Order the croquetas de jamon (ham croquettes) and the pulpo a la gallega (Galician-style octopus). Address: Avenida de la Flota 45.
Bar Malvarrosa
€No-frills bar where you get a free tapa with every drink. The free tapas are decent—often tortilla or albondigas (meatballs). Cash only. Address: Calle del Puerto 8.
Cerveceria La Esquina
€€Great for beer lovers, with a wide selection of Spanish craft brews. Tapas are solid—try the patatas bravas (spicy potatoes) and the queso manchego (sheep's cheese). Address: Plaza de la Flota 3.
Local Tips
Go between 8pm and 10:30pm. Earlier is quiet, later gets crowded. Weekends are busiest, but weekdays have a more local feel.
Start with a caña (small beer) or tinto de verano (red wine with soda). Ask for the carta (menu) to see the paid tapas. Don't be shy to share—tapas are meant for sharing.
In summer, it gets very hot. Most bars have air conditioning inside, but terraces can be warm. Go for indoor seating if you're sensitive to heat.
