La Fama keeps it simple: cheap drinks, generous portions, and zero pretence. Don't expect fancy menus or English translations.

01

The Tapas Scene

La Fama is a working-class neighbourhood east of the city centre. It's not polished or trendy – and that's the point.

You'll find family-run bars that haven't changed in decades. Think plastic chairs, football on TV, and handwritten chalkboard menus.

Tapas here are straightforward. Order a drink (beer or wine) and you'll get a small plate of food included. No extra charge. That's the Murcian way.

Prices are among the lowest in the city. A caña (small beer) costs around €1.50-€2, with tapa included. Full raciones (larger plates) run €5-€10.

Best Tapas Bars

Bar Paco

Traditional Family-run

The quintessential La Fama bar. Paco himself still works the counter. Their marinera (potato salad with tuna and mayo) is legendary. Order a caña and see what you get.

Calle Mayor 12, La Fama

La Tasca de Juan

Seafood Standing bar

Tiny place that does one thing well: fried seafood. Their boquerones (fresh anchovies) and calamares are crispy and not greasy. Get a white wine to cut through the oil.

Plaza de la Fama 3, La Fama

Cerveceria El Rincon

Beer selection Meat tapas

Unusual for La Fama: they have several craft beers on tap. Tapas are meat-heavy – try the morcilla (blood sausage) or lomo (cured pork). Good for a change of pace.

Calle San Pedro 8, La Fama

Taberna La Esquina

Vermouth Classic

The place for vermut (vermouth) on weekends. They serve it with an olive and orange slice. Tapas are simple: olives, chips, maybe some cheese. Perfect pre-lunch spot.

Local Tips

💡
When to go

Evenings from 8pm onwards are busiest. Sunday lunchtime (2-4pm) is also lively. Many places close Monday or Tuesday.

📍
How to order

Just ask for "una caña" (small beer) or "un vino" (wine). The tapa comes automatically. If you want something specific, say "¿Qué tapa hay?" (what tapa is there?).

⚠️
Cash only

Most bars here don't take cards. Bring cash, preferably small bills. An ATM is near the market if you forget.

La Fama isn't about finding the "best" tapa – it's about the experience. You're drinking where generations of Murcianos have. The food is honest, the prices are fair, and nobody's trying to impress you.

That's why we keep coming back.
