The vibe
Tapas in Churra is about local life, not tourist traps

Expect simple bars where you'll hear more Spanish than English, with honest food and friendly prices. It's where university students and residents go.

01

The Tapas Scene

Churra is a pedania (a small district) north of Murcia city, near the university campus. It's mostly residential, so the tapas scene here is for locals.

You won't find fancy decor or elaborate menus. Bars are straightforward: a counter, some tables, and a TV often showing football. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual.

Prices are low. Most tapas cost €2-€4, and a caña (small beer) is around €1.50. It's one of the cheapest areas in Murcia for tapas.

02

Best Tapas Bars

These are my picks. They're all within walking distance in Churra.

Bar El Rincon de Churra

Traditional Local favourite

A no-frills bar that's been here for decades. Their pipirrana (a Murcian salad with tomato, pepper, onion, and tuna) is the best in the area. Order it with a tapa of morcilla (blood sausage). Address: Calle Mayor 12, Churra.

La Tasca del Campus

Student spot Busy

Popular with university students. It's loud and lively. Try their patatas bravas (fried potatoes with spicy sauce) and croquetas (croquettes, usually ham or chicken). Address: Avenida de la Universidad 5, Churra.

Meson Don Pepe

€€
Family-run Hearty food

A bit more upscale but still affordable. Known for meat dishes. Order the carrillada (pork cheek stew) or a plate of embutidos (cured meats). Address: Calle San Antonio 8, Churra.

Bar La Plaza

Terrace Sunny

Has a small terrace perfect for sunny days. Good for seafood tapas like boquerones (anchovies in vinegar) and calamares (fried squid). Address: Plaza de la Constitución 3, Churra.

Taberna El Botijo

Rustic Wine bar

Focuses on local wines from Murcia. Pair a glass with their queso manchego (sheep's cheese) or aceitunas (olives). Address: Calle del Olmo 15, Churra.

Local Tips

💡
Go late

Locals eat tapas late. Aim for 8:30 PM onwards. Before that, bars might be quiet or closed for siesta.

📍
Order like a local

In many bars, you get a free tapa with your drink. But ask: "¿La bebida lleva tapa?" (Does the drink come with a tapa?). If not, order raciones (larger portions) to share.

⚠️
Weekends are busy

Friday and Saturday nights get packed, especially at student bars. Go early to get a table, or be ready to stand.
