Order a caña (small beer) or tinto de verano (red wine with soda) and get a tapa included. No extra charge. That's how we do it in Alhama.
The Tapas Scene
Alhama de Murcia (pronounced al-AH-mah) is a proper pueblo, not a tourist trap. The tapas scene is local, relaxed, and focused on good food without fuss.
Expect family-run bars where the owner might chat with you. Atmosphere is casual, often with football on TV and groups of friends sharing plates. It's not fancy, but it's authentic.
Prices are low. Most tapas cost €2-€4, and many places still include a free tapa with your drink. A full meal with drinks might set you back €15-€20 per person.
Best Tapas Bars
These are my go-to spots. All are in the town centre, within walking distance.
Bar El Rincon
€Tiny bar with the best migas con tropezones (fried breadcrumbs with pork bits) in town. Order a caña and you'll get a tapa of olives or cheese. Address: Calle Mayor 12.
La Tasca de Paco
€€Slightly fancier, with creative tapas like grilled octopus and local cheese boards. Try their house red wine. Address: Plaza de la Constitución 5.
Meson El Balneario
€€Perfect after visiting the thermal baths. Big portions of stews and grilled meats. Their patatas bravas (spicy potatoes) are a must. Address: Avenida de los Baños 8.
Bar La Esquina
€No-frills spot for a fast tapa. Their tortilla española (Spanish omelette) is thick and delicious. Address: Calle San Francisco 3.
Local Tips
Locals eat tapas from 8pm onwards. Before that, bars are quiet. Aim for 8:30pm-11pm for the best atmosphere.
Many bars have a daily special tapa that's not on the menu. Just ask "¿Cuál es la tapa del día?" (What's the daily tapa?). It's often the freshest option.
Many bars close on Sunday afternoons. Plan your tapas crawl for Friday or Saturday night instead.
