La Manga vs Aguilas: Which Murcia Coast is Right for You?

If you want convenience and everything in one place, pick La Manga. If you prefer character and local life, go to Aguilas. Both have great weather, but the experience is completely different.
Introduction
Murcia has two main coastal options, and they're like different countries. La Manga (the sleeve) is a 22km sandbar between the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor lagoon. Aguilas (ah-GHEE-las) is a proper town with history, perched on cliffs above wilder beaches.
This matters because people often book one expecting the other. La Manga gets called "Spain's Florida" for good reason - it's all about the resort life. Aguilas feels more like the real Spain, just with excellent beaches attached.

Beaches and Water
La Manga has two sides: the Mar Menor (warm, shallow, calm) and the Mediterranean (normal sea with waves). The Mar Menor is like a giant paddling pool - perfect for kids and nervous swimmers. Water temperatures hit 30°C in summer.
Aguilas beaches are all Mediterranean. Playa de la Cola (literally "tail beach") is the main one, with golden sand and clear water. Playa de Calabardina has dramatic rocks. The water's cooler and there are actual waves.

Atmosphere and Crowds
La Manga is one long strip of apartments, hotels, and restaurants. It's busy July-August with Spanish and European families. Off-season (October-April) it's quiet - some places close.
Aguilas has a town centre with squares, churches, and normal life happening. The beach area gets visitors but the town keeps its Spanish rhythm. Less international, more local Spanish tourists.

FreeThe heart of Aguilas' seafront. Perfect for the evening paseo (stroll) when locals come out. Watch the sunset with a beer from one of the kiosks.
Food and Drink
La Manga has everything from burger joints to fancy seafood. Prices are higher, especially on the waterfront. Lots of international options if you get tired of Spanish food.
Aguilas eats are more authentic and better value. Try caldero (rice with fish stew) or anything with local seafood. Tapas bars in the old town serve proper raciones (large tapas portions).

€€Family-run place in Aguilas port. Their grilled fish is what you came to Spain for. No fancy presentation, just quality ingredients cooked right.
Practical Stuff
Getting there: La Manga is 45 minutes from Murcia airport, Aguilas is 1.5 hours. Both need a car - public transport exists but isn't great.
Accommodation: La Manga is mostly apartments and hotels on the strip. Aguilas has hotels in town and some beach apartments. Aguilas is generally cheaper.
When to go: Both are hot June-September. La Manga has more summer activities. Aguilas is better in spring/autumn when you can enjoy the town too.
Tips
Rent a car and split your time. Do 3-4 days in La Manga for beach relaxation, then 2-3 in Aguilas for culture and different beaches. They're 90 minutes apart by car.
Both get VERY hot July-August (35-40°C). Aguilas has more breeze. In La Manga, the Mar Menor water gets almost too warm. Consider May/June or September.
Aguilas has better fiestas. The Carnival (February) is famous nationwide. La Manga events are more tourist-focused like beach parties.
