Calblanque vs Bolnuevo: Which Murcia Beach is Right for You?
Compare Calblanque's wild nature with Bolnuevo's famous rock formations. A local's guide to choosing your perfect Murcia beach day.
If you want untouched nature and don't mind some planning, go to Calblanque. If you want easy access, facilities, and those famous rock formations, choose Bolnuevo.
Introduction
Murcia has two famous coastal spots that tourists often confuse: Calblanque (kal-BLAN-kay) and Bolnuevo (bol-NWAY-vo). They're both on the coast, but they're completely different experiences.
This isn't about which is "better" - it's about which is right for your day out. I've been going to both since I was a kid, and here's what you need to know.

What You Get at Each Place
Calblanque is a protected natural park. It's wild, with no buildings, no beach bars (chiringuitos), and limited access. The beaches are stunning - think golden sand, clear water, and pine trees right up to the shore.
Bolnuevo is a developed beach area with the famous Erosiones de Bolnuevo - those weird, sculpted rock formations that look like melted sandcastles. It has everything: restaurants, toilets, showers, and easy parking.
Access and Practical Stuff
This is the big difference. From June 15 to September 15, you can't drive into Calblanque. You need to take a shuttle bus from the parking area outside the park. It costs a few euros and runs regularly, but it adds time.
Bolnuevo you just drive to and park. There's a big free parking area right behind the beach. No shuttles, no restrictions.
The Beaches Themselves
Calblanque Beaches
FreeSeveral coves with fine sand and clear water. Cala Magre is the main one. No facilities except some basic toilets in summer. Bring everything you need.
Bolnuevo Beach
FreeLong sandy beach with the rock formations at one end. Full facilities: showers, toilets, lifeguards in summer, and beach bars. The sand is darker than Calblanque's.
Food and Drink
At Calblanque, bring a picnic. There's literally nothing to buy inside the park. Some people like this - it feels more authentic.
Bolnuevo has multiple options right on the beachfront. Try Restaurante El Chiringuito for fresh fish or one of the smaller bars for a beer and tapas.
Crowds and Atmosphere
Calblanque gets busy in summer, but the shuttle system limits numbers. It never feels packed. Off-season, you might have a beach to yourself.
Bolnuevo is popular with Spanish families and gets crowded in July and August. The rock formations area is always busy with people taking photos.
Best Time to Visit
Calblanque is amazing in spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). The weather is good, the water's warm enough for swimming, and there are no access restrictions.
Bolnuevo works year-round. Even in winter, you can walk along the beach and see the rocks. The facilities are open from Easter through October.
Tips
Get to the parking area early in summer - by 10am at latest. The shuttle queue gets long. Bring cash for the shuttle ticket (around €3 per person).
Water, food, sunscreen, umbrella or shade (there's little natural shade on the beaches), and cash. There are no ATMs and most places don't take cards.
Visit the rocks at sunset - the light is beautiful and most day-trippers have left. The formations are called "Gredas de Bolnuevo" locally.
