01

Introduction

Totana (toh-TAH-nah) sits at the foot of Sierra Espuña, about 45 minutes southwest of Murcia city. Most visitors come here for the hiking, but they often leave impressed by the town itself.

This is a working town, not a tourist resort. You'll find pottery workshops that have been operating for centuries, family-run tapas bars, and locals who actually live here year-round. It feels authentic because it is.

What to see and do

Sierra Espuña Natural Park

The main reason people come here. Sierra Espuña is Murcia's most accessible mountain range, with hiking trails for all levels. The park entrance is literally at the edge of town.

For beginners, try the Sendero de la Perdiz - a 5km loop with great views. Serious hikers head to Morrón de Espuña (1,585m), the highest peak. The visitor centre has maps and current trail conditions.

Pottery workshops

Totana has been a pottery centre since Moorish times. The local clay gives the ceramics their distinctive reddish colour. Several workshops still operate using traditional methods.

Look for the tall brick chimneys around town - they mark the pottery kilns. Many workshops welcome visitors, especially during weekday mornings. You can watch the potters work and buy directly from them.

Alfarería Hernández

Workshop Traditional Family-run

One of the oldest workshops still operating. The Hernández family has been making pottery here for generations. They're usually happy to show visitors around if they're not too busy.

Santa Eulalia de Mérida

The town's main church, built between the 16th and 18th centuries. The Baroque facade is worth a look, but the real interest is inside - check out the 18th-century organ and the chapel dedicated to the town's patron saint.

It's on the main square (Plaza de la Constitución), which is also where you'll find most of the bars and cafes. Good spot for people-watching in the evening.

Where to eat

Totana punches above its weight food-wise. You'll find proper local places that haven't been gentrified for tourists. Portions are generous and prices are reasonable.

Tips

💡
Hike early

In summer, Sierra Espuña gets very hot by midday. Start your hike by 8am and finish before noon. Carry at least 2 litres of water per person - there are few water sources on the trails.

📍
Local pottery buying

The best pottery isn't in souvenir shops. Go directly to workshops like Alfarería Hernández or look for the "Alfarería" signs. Prices are lower and quality is higher. They'll wrap pieces securely for travel.

⚠️
Sunday closures

Most shops and many restaurants close on Sunday afternoons. Plan accordingly. The exception is bars around the main square, which stay open for drinks and tapas.
