Come for the baths, stay for the almonds

Alhama (al-AH-mah) is more than just hot springs. It's a working town with a castle, good local food, and almond trees everywhere. Skip the summer unless you like extreme heat.

01

What's Alhama de Murcia?

Alhama de Murcia is a town in the southwest of the Murcia region, about 30 km from the capital. The name comes from Arabic "al-hamma" meaning "hot spring" – and yes, there are thermal baths here that the Romans used.

This isn't a tourist trap. It's a proper Spanish town where people live and work, with agriculture (especially almonds) and some industry. The historic centre is small but has character, and the surrounding countryside is dry but beautiful in spring.

What to see and do

The thermal baths

The main reason people visit. There are two options:

Balneario de Alhama de Murcia

€€€
Spa Thermal Modern

A modern spa complex with indoor and outdoor pools using the thermal waters. It's clean, well-maintained, and has treatments. Book ahead, especially on weekends.

Baños termales romanos

Archaeology Ruins History

The excavated Roman baths near the spa. You can see the old structures but can't bathe here. Interesting if you like history, takes about 20 minutes.

Castillo de Alhama

A 12th-century Moorish castle on a hill overlooking the town. It's partly ruined but you can walk up for views. The climb is steep but short (10-15 minutes). Free entry.

Iglesia de San Lazaro

The main church in the centre, built in the 18th century. Baroque style, typical for the region. Worth a quick look inside if it's open.

Almond country

Alhama is surrounded by almond orchards. In late January/early February, the trees bloom with white and pink flowers – it's quite a sight. The local almond products (turron, marzipan) are good.

Where to eat

Mesón El Molino

€€
Traditional Local Meat

Solid Murcian food. Try the zarangollo (scrambled eggs with zucchini and onion) or any of the grilled meats. Family-run, no frills.

Bar La Tasca

Tapas Bar Centre

For drinks and tapas in the main square. The patatas bravas are decent. Good for people-watching in the evening.

Practical info

  • Getting there: Drive from Murcia city via the A-7 motorway (exit 581). Parking is easy in the centre.
  • When to go: Spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November). Summer is VERY hot – often over 40°C.
  • Time needed: Half a day is enough unless you're doing the spa.

Local tips

⚠️
Avoid summer visits

From June to September, Alhama gets brutally hot. The thermal baths are less enjoyable when it's 42°C outside. If you must come in summer, visit early morning or late evening.

💡
Combine with Sierra Espuña

Alhama is near Sierra Espuña natural park. Make a day of it: morning in Alhama, afternoon hiking or driving through the mountains (20 minutes away).

🏠
Try the almonds

Look for turrón de Alhama (almond nougat) or mantecados (almond cookies) in local bakeries. They make good souvenirs.
